Brigham Young University BYU is a universe of its own. It's "intranet" is vast, and much of it is of interest to Latter-day Saints. Especially check out the Department of Religious Studies and the Department of Independent Studies. The sites for BYU Studies, The Daily Universe, and KBYU television are also here. Simply an awesome site. Deseret Book For all of its shortcomings, and many on the Net gripe about Deseret Book, it is still the best bookstore for selection and price on books written by our General Authorities, past and present, and titles that are not controversial. It's also one of the best places to get the Standard Works. The website is very professionally done. Recommended. F.A.R.M.S. Congratulations to F.A.R.M.S. (The Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies) for becoming part of Brigham Young University. Their funding will now be better, and this is an organization that deserves it. Publishing scholarship of the highest order, they nevertheless remain faithful to their priesthood and to the Church, a combination not seen in every quarter. This website is excellent. It contains a lot of original material and is high in content, not merely being a collection of links. The Official Church Website This site needs no introduction. It is the official website of the Church. It contains information of interest to journalists writing about the Church. It also contains information about membership distribution around the world. The site is very professionally done, and has plenty of original content. But its main claim to fame is its authoritativeness. It is the official organ of the Church just as the Church Magazines are. Church News This is the Church News section from the Deseret News newspaper every weekend. It contains much for everyone, and even more for subscribers who gain special access to the archives and more complete treatment of the news stories with a username and a password. If you enjoy the Church News in hardcopy, try this. It solves the problem of how to store all that newsprint. LDS Church Radio on the Net (Bonneville International) Websurfers often like to listen to music or the radio in the background as they roam the Internet or do email. This site will let you listen to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, easy listening music, Conference talks, fireside addresses by General Authorities, and news. One can also listen to General Conference here in case they can't get to Church. It's a great site for Latter-day Saint cybersurfers. Clark Goble's "LDS Internet Frequently Asked Questions" This is simply one of the best "links" pages on the Web for Latter-day Saints. It is especially good for its coverage of email discussion lists for Latter-day Saints. Clark has a scholarly bent, and that fact is reflected in his FAQ. For someone who wants no nonsense, business like access to the Mormon Web community, this is an excellent site. Brandon Plewe's "LDS Info on the Internet" * Arden Eby's "Religium: Religious Studies Center" * Ryan Henrie's "The LDS Info Base" * * Note from the Webmaster: Entries marked with an asterisk have no capsule review. Please help. Check out the site and send a capsule review to me at la7878@ptialaska.net. I want to make the Guide a group effort as much as possible. I'll include the best of the capsule reviews in my next revision of these pages. |
