What is this going to cost?
There are four separate cost items to consider
Domain name
Site creation and maintenance
Hosting the site
Special features
(1) Domain names:
Domain names are the dot com and similar names you hear on radio and TV adds.
What Is A Domain Name. You can have more than one name, you pay an
annual fee for each name. The retail rate for names that end in .com, .org and most others is $35/year. Some names like .us are up to $50/year.
If you are thinking of getting a web site now or in the future, get the name now. There are a lot of new endings available now such as .TV .NAME .US. Most customers will not remember the correct ending of your web site name unless you have a .COM or maybe a .US. Worst yet, if you tell people your web site name is joeshardware.TV and they go to
joeshardware.COM, you just sent them to your competitor. A (poor-name .COM) is probably better than a
(good-name.TV).
There is an option to getting your own domain name. You can ride on someone else's
name (with their permission of coarse). For example we have an associate that is using the IPERFORM.NET name.
His web site is
iperform.net/ncca. There are two ways you can ride on someone else's name. Your web site can be
yourname.iperform.net or iperform.net/yourname. We have a variety of names to use as a base besides
iperform.net. See our list of names at Internet
Performance Domain Names that you can share. There is no registration fee to ride on someone
else's name, and you may find a base name that easy for your customers to remember.
Bottom Line: Standard web name=$35/year.
(2) Web Site creation and maintenance:
This cost varies a LOT. The major cost will be for the time of a web developer. If someone spends 50 hours creating your web site, they want to get paid for the time spent. Time consuming items are graphics and custom web features.
If all you want is to put your brochure on-line and you have it in electronic form like a word document, we can convert it to a web site for free. Adding a few simple changes would be cheap or free.
There are computer programs that create a web site for you. You provide information like your business name, address, etc and it will build a blank web site that you can finish by filling in the blanks. These web sites have a fairly nice but canned look. Internet people tend to look down on these, but your customers will probably not know the difference. These web site generating
programs cost hundreds of dollars but can be used to make numerous web sites. We have these programs and can use them to create a nice looking, canned web site. Because the program can be used over and over, the cost of the program is low. Because the program does not consume a lot of web developer time, these program generated web site are usually very reasonable.
Custom features including creating graphics, databases, and on-line catalogs or ordering tend to be very time consuming and more expensive.
Bottom Line: Varies, Put your existing document on-line, free. Create a simple site about $100.
(3) Hosting:
Web Sites need to be put on a computer running special software called web server software. These computers make the web sites available for the world to see.
See: what is hosting.
People that provide web hosting charge a fee to use their equipment. This fee is normally in the range of $20/month for each web site. If your web site is very large or uses special features, the fee will be higher.
Internet Performance HOSTING RATES
Bottom Line: Simple site about $20/Month.
(4) Special Features:
There are many special features that add to the cost of web site creation and or hosting. One of the most expensive
options is SSL secure server. SSL (Secure Socket Layer), is used for on-line catalogs or any place information must be tamperproof. The most common reason is when someone is providing credit card information over over the Internet. The Internet is not secure by nature, SSL makes it secure. The current rate for SSL is $350 for the first year, and $250 every following year. SSL requires some custom web programming.
WHAT IS SSL
Bottom Line: Special features vary too much to quote.
