WHAT IS A WEB SITE ?
A web site is document written in a special language called Hypertext Markup Language (also called HTML).
HTML was created for researchers to publish documents that could reference
other documents. HTML is like a computer programming language that describe how to display the document with numerous features including
typeface, type size, colors, and a wide variety of other features. The big deal about HTML was that it allows a document on one computer to reference a document on another computer over the Internet. You can LINK to another document. This is a great system to reference research material.
HTML also allows you to insert pictures into the document. This too was a
great feature for publishing research documents.
HTML has been improved several times and now has tons or features. HTML now adds the capability of additional computer programming languages, Java Script, VB script, CGI, Perl, ASP and other languages can be imbedded into the document.
The variety of features can be seen by going to almost any web site and linking to other web sites. You will find programs that activate when you place you mouse over an item or when you click on an item. There are pictures, graphics, and animated graphics. You can imbed sound and video files into a document. There is even the feature of generating those
annoying pop-up adds.
With the additional programming languages, HTML documents are powerful programs that can collect data, perform calculations, and perform complex operations such as operate an on-line store.
The full list of features is a study in itself.
How do you write these programs?
A simple text editor is all that is required to write all the program instructions in to a document. Very simple web sites may be written this way. As the list of features gets bigger or as the collection of pages gets bigger, you can fry your brain trying to keep track of things with a text editor.
Web developers use special programs to create web sites. These programs allow more graphical interface. There is more "point and click" and "drag and drop" rather than writing program
instructions. The web generation programs help keep the pages of a large web site in order. These web generation programs usually run about
$300 to $900.
An Analogy
A good analogy would be that creating a web site is like creating a
movie. It requires cameras, film, actors, stages, lighting, etc. The price
to produce the movie can vary a lot.
