There are two approaches to closing the open paths to your computer. One approach is to disable the things that you do not need, this closes the doorways to your computer that you were not using but attackers could use. Another approach is to use firewall software or firewall hardware to examine the traffic going into your computer and look for and block things that are known to be harmful.
