Setup
FTP
FTP or File Transfer Protocol is the standard Internet program for
moving files from one computer to another. This is the most common
tool for putting your web site files on the computer that is hosting
your web site. (Note: Microsoft Front Page uses its own internal
file mover to "publish a web". If you are using Front Page
to publish your web, you do not use FTP.)
Set up FTP
There are several FTP programs on the market, WSFTP, and CuteFTP
are two very common ones. You can still find trial copies of these
programs that have limited capability or will only work for a
limited time. Once you have the FTP program installed, there are
three items that need to be set up for it to work.
-
Hostname: This will be the name of your web site, e.g.
www.acme.com.
-
UserName: This will be assigned by us.
-
Password: This will be assigned by us also.
Once you connect to our server, you should be in your own folder
for your web site. You can move files from the web site to your
computer so you can modify them, or you can move the modified files
from your computer to the web site. When you get the files from the
web site, it is a good idea to keep a copy of the unmodified files
as a backup before you start making changes.
